SándorGyörffy painter
al
was born in the western Hungarian village of Kapolcs in 1951, into a farming family. In his formative years he lived in his native village. The nearness to flora and fauna has substantially influenced his way of thinking and living, and continues to affect his artistic work to this day. This influence appears in multiple ways during different periods: the natural forms and the motifs of vegetation are discernible to varying degrees in his works.
In 1970 Győrffy moved to Budapest. Instead of seeking an academic education, he pursued his studies of painting and graphic art in artist groups which were self-chosen, and with elder masters. Since 1976 he has been exhibiting his works.
Since then he has taken several study trips, worked in international artists villages and participated in symposiums in eleven European countries. He has stayed for a longer period in West-Berlin and the US on grants. He speaks Hungarian, German, French and English.
His artistic work includes paintings, single and serial graphics, photos, sculptures, installations as well as land art. His artistic fields before: experimental theater and film.
He has had more than 100 personal exhibitions and participated in about 700 group-exhibitions in 26 countries so far.
His works are in the collections of 59 museums and public collections in 19 countries and can be found in numerous private collections.
In 1997 he was founding members of the Cultural Association Friends of the Mura Region.
He is general editor of the cultural review Muravidék.
